Once upon a time, founders were characterized as quirky individuals toiling away in their garages. Today, they’ve stepped into the limelight as influential figures in the tech landscape.
Des Traynor, who co-established Intercom in 2011, reflects on this shift in perception, noting that founders were once considered intellectually gifted yet socially inept. However, the landscape of Silicon Valley has evolved, presenting a more polished image accompanied by substantial financial investment, particularly driven by the recent surge in artificial intelligence funding, which has lured many young innovators and recent graduates into entrepreneurship.
Now, according to Traynor, being a founder has become a symbol of status, as highlighted during his discussion on “Cheeky Pint.” He cautions that this newfound glamor can lead some aspiring entrepreneurs to pursue startup ventures for the wrong reasons.
It was much easier to attract investments back when being a founder was considered uncool,” Traynor remarked, attributing his concerns to cultural influences such as the film ‘The Social Network’, the allure of the entrepreneur lifestyle, and social media platforms like TikTok.
Stripe’s cofounder John Collison echoed Traynor’s sentiments, bringing up the exclusive members’ club Soho House as a representation of this shift. “Absolutely, everything goes into that,” Traynor concurred.
Traynor also pointed to the rise of remote work as another factor in this transformation. He cautioned new founders about the seduction of the glamorous startup life, emphasizing in a communication to Business Insider, “You only get one shot at life; don’t squander it pretending to be a startup founder for social media validation.” He continued, “If your motivation for starting a business is to curate an Instagram-worthy lifestyle, you’ll come to the harsh realization that social media likes won’t cover your costs, and the demand for picturesque ‘laptop on the beach’ photos is virtually nonexistent.”
For Traynor, the only legitimate reason to embark on the entrepreneurial journey is a “profound and unquenchable desire to create something meaningful that benefits society.” He believes this genuine passion is crucial to navigate the inevitable challenges that startups entail.
To thrive, you need a deep-rooted motivation that can carry you through the trying times that every startup—inclusive of successful ones—will inevitably present,” he stated. “The workload is intense, and it’s a 24/7 commitment. So, you must truly want it.”
What then will be the fate of those chasing superficial validation? According to Traynor, they will “slowly falter” as they squander valuable years toggling between vanity and identity.
“Eventually, you will realize that achieving success is less about late-night selfies and trending hashtags, and more about creating products that fulfill actual needs, engaging with users, and honing your skills,” Traynor wrote.
The era of fun office perks like ping-pong tables and casual nap rooms is fading. Today’s founders are adopting a rigorous work ethic, often surrendering social activities and living in austere conditions. Many are embracing a “9-9-6” work schedule, that is, committing from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week.
“If that sounds appealing, then welcome aboard—just know the water is frigid and the outcome unpredictable.”

### Hustle Verdict
Our take is that this cultural shift toward glamorizing the startup lifestyle could lead to a wave of short-lived ventures founded on superficial motivations. We believe that sustainable success hinges on a genuine commitment to creating value, rather than chasing trends. The bottom line is that as the startup ecosystem matures, only those entrepreneurs who prioritize purpose and perseverance will stand the test of time, ultimately reshaping the industry in profound ways.
