Meta has confirmed to TechCrunch that it is currently testing a standalone Vibes app. Initially launched in September, Vibes enables users to create and share short-form AI-generated videos while providing a dedicated feed showcasing AI content from other users.
Imagine a platform akin to TikTok or Instagram Reels, except every video you encounter is generated by AI. Previously, this feed was integrated within the Meta AI app. By introducing Vibes as a standalone application, Meta aims to position it as a direct competitor to Sora, an AI-generated video and social app from OpenAI that debuted shortly after Vibes.
“Building on the early success of Vibes within the Meta AI ecosystem, we are testing a standalone app to harness that momentum,” stated Meta in an emailed response. “We have observed a growing interest among users in creating, discovering, and sharing AI-generated videos with their peers. This dedicated app offers a focused and immersive environment for that experience, and we plan to expand its features based on community feedback.”
This development was first reported by Platformer.
Although Meta has not disclosed specific user numbers, it claims that Vibes has been performing well, with a steady increase in Meta AI usage since its launch, suggesting a demand for a standalone application.
Meta also highlights that while users engage with content within the Meta AI app, a standalone version enhances the user experience for content creation and interaction.
Vibes allows users to generate videos from scratch or remix existing videos found in their feed. Users can enhance their creations with new visuals, music layering, and style adjustments before posting to the Vibes feed, sending direct messages to friends, or cross-posting on Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels.
Meta reports a growing trend in collaboration and sharing, with many Vibes videos being sent to friends, reflecting similar usage patterns seen in Instagram Reels.
Moreover, Meta informed TechCrunch last week that, in addition to exploring new premium subscription models across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, it will consider subscription options for AI features, including those within Vibes.
While Vibes has been available for free since its launch, Meta intends to introduce a freemium model for video creation, allowing users to subscribe for access to additional monthly video creation features. Meta plans to roll out these test subscriptions in the upcoming months.
